My favorite food is crabs. :) I have tried many crab dishes in Indonesia as well as in US. Layar's "Kepiting Saus Padang" is by far the most tastiest crabs I have ever eaten in my whole life. Seriously! It's that good. Just thinking about it already makes my mouth water. *slurp*
They had HUGE variety of seafood to choose from. They offered different kinds of cooking method, such as grilled, fried, sauteed, and boiled. As of course, different kind of sauces to go with the seafood.
I have heard about "Kepiting Telur Asin" (crabs cooked with salted eggs) that was the number one seller in Layar. Unfortunately, I did not order that since my companions chose to go with the spicy one, "Kepiting Saus Padang", the second best seller.
"Saus Padang" is basically a spicy sauce consisted with garlic, chilies, tomato sauce, and spices.
It went well with par-fried crabs.
With that, we ordered "tumis ginseng" (sauteed ginseng leaves), boiled little neck clams, crab soup with white asparagus, "Udang telur asin" (prawns cooked with salted eggs), grilled pomfret with sweet soy sauce, and finally "gurame" fish cooking in sweet and sour sauce.
First thing first, the soup was horrible. Never order the crab soup from Layar, it's 'crabby'. I hated it so much that I stopped eating it after the first spoon. :(
Boiled little neck clams were good. It served well as an appetizer. However, Indonesian people need to be educated about clams in general. Many of them were closed. People think it is safe to eat closed clams as long as it's cooked. Well, NO! Throw away the closed ones, it means they're already dead before they're cooked.
Anyway, the fish were good. Although I think they should have added more spices to take the 'dirt' smell.
The prawns were awesome! Now I know why "Kepiting telur asin" is the number one seller. The sauce was pretty much the same as the prawns, but different seafood. It was not overwhelmingly salty, it was perfect in balance of smokiness and saltiness.
Let's talk about the most delicious crabs I have ever eaten (for now). The crabs were big, we ordered one female (with eggs) and one male.
The sauce was spicy with a hint of sweetness. They cooked the crabs perfectly, not overcooked that made the meat rubbery. How can I put it in words? I can't! You have to try it for yourselves. :)
Layar is awesome!!!
